Yes Way Minnéapolis

In the past year while preparing for the release of our Yes Way Rosé signature rosé we have spent quite a bit of time in our new and unexpected home away from home… Minneapolis, Minnesota! Both Targét’s and our wine importer’s HQ are located there, so we’ve had the opportunity to explore what the city has to offer on several occasions. We could of never predicted that the Twin Cities would become a regular Yes Way destinétion, but we’re pleasantly surprised every time we visit and carve out a little time to scope out the scene. Here is what we’ve found so far.

The North Loop in the historic Warehouse District, adjacent to Downtown Minneapolis, is a neighborhood booming with cool restaurants, stores, bars and breweries. Dinner at Spoon and Stable, where James Beard Award winning chef Gavin Kaysen prepares delectable seasonal fare in a big open kitchen, has been a top highlight. (There’s also a glass wine cellar on the dining room floor adding to the element of transparency). We were obsessed with the food, particularly the presentation of bread and butter with the latter served on a scrap of black and white marble.

The Bachelor Farmer is the perfect place to try wines from from hard-to-find independent producers because of a chalkboard system that allows you to order a glass from a bottle that’s already been open, and open any bottle without buying the whole thing. It’s a dream situation that everyone in the restaurant benefits from! We love their glassware, printed with a small red heart, and the hearty regional fare.

Located underneath of the Bachelor Farmer is a hip speakeasy, Marvel Bar, with an inventive cocktail list that definitely requires some decoding. That is unless you know what Araki, Farigoule or cascara are without googling.  After heavily consulting our waiter the favorite was a refreshing cocktail on the simple side called Savvy. B with white wine, ginger, and seltzer.

Also worth checking out in the North Loop: Fairgrounds CafeGrethen HouseHewing Hotel.

Minneapolis’s internationally renowned Walker Art Center is a cultural must on trip to the city for its contemporary art shows, sculpture garden (featuring Claes Oldenberg’s Spoonbridge and Cherry as the centerpiece), and one of the best museum gift shops around.

The Lynhall, up the street from the Walker, came highly recommended from our friends at Cherrybombe via their Instagram. The bakery/cafe/bar is airy and ideal for a working lunch, with insanely delicious baked goods and a polenta breakfast with shredded vegetables that we will be going back for.

Stop by the recently upgraded Hum’s Liquor Store for plentiful rosé and a selection of intriguing bottles, including this very Liz Phair-circa-1993 label from Saint K in Paso Robles that we had to pick up.

On the other side of the Mississippi River near the University of Minnesota is Alma, a hotel, fine-dining restaurant, and cafe in one. We had a celebratory meal in the fine dining restaurant on one occasion and brunch in the cafe on another. Both were divine.

Further north is the Northrup King Building, a cool industrial artist’s space that we discovered when we went to meet Minneapolis-based artist Ashley Mary at her studio. We first learned about Ashley’s work when we saw a gorgeous screen-printed bottle of rosé she designed as a collaboration with Minuty. We deeply connected to her overall aesthetic and graphic sensibility and thought it was fate when we found out she lives in Minnesota. After posting the bottle and making an Insta-connection we set up a visit and became even more enthralled with both her and her work. Visit the building on a Saturday for Open Studios and hope that Ashley is there. If not, there are several other galleries, furniture designers, and artist studios to explore and you can shop her work on her site.
